Orthopedics is the medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. Injuries and conditions of this type are very common.
About 7 million orthopedic surgeries are performed yearly in America, and many other orthopedic appointments don’t involve surgery.
Some of the most common orthopedic issues include:
Joint pain is extremely common today with conditions like osteoarthritis. Some of the most common areas of joint pain are the hips and knees, but you can also experience joint pain in smaller areas, like your hands and fingers.
Back pain can occur because of repetitive strain, injury, or age-related changes in the spine. The most common area for back pain is the last several vertebrae in the lower back. Many people with lower back pain experience sciatica, radiating pain that moves down the hip, buttocks, and leg.
Bursitis is inflammation in the bursae, the tiny cushioning sacs near the ends of bones. Normally, the sacs prevent bone from rubbing against muscle. When bursae grow inflamed, it can be quite painful. The most common places for bursitis are the elbows, hips, and shoulders, but it can also affect other areas.
Gout is a form of arthritis that develops when uric acid collects in certain joints, which causes sharp and painful crystals to form. The most common area for gout is the big toe, however, it can also affect other joints.
Sprains occur when ligaments stretch or tear, and strains refer to the same type of injury in either tendons or muscles. Ankle sprains are the most common type of sprain, and some of the most common strains include hamstring injuries and Achilles tendonitis.
